“In the honour of 1st of April, as the Ambassador to Užupis from the Worldwide, Universal and Galaxy-wide human rights movement, I would like to congratulate all People of Užupis, all the Ambassadors to Užupis on this wonderful day – the Independence Day. Further, I express my sincere wish that in every city, in every community, in every small village, was a place, where the Constitution of Užupis would hang, the most human rights inspired сonstitution in this Universe.
Well, and as a human rights activist and a follower of many of their teachers, including Socrates, I raise this cup (the Helmock Cup, of course) to the health of all People of Užupis”.

Н.Е.Dmitry (Aravak) Makarov is accredited as an Ambassador of the Independent Republic of Uzhupis to Scythia on 02.09.2010 in Uzhupis. See video from inauguration here

Aravak is а true traveller who is committed to his duty to spread Uzhupis ideas amongst Scythian people and hundreds of friends of Scythia living in many countries.

Dmitri Makarov

Mission of the Embassy is to deepen the links between Scythia which lives in the heart of every Scythian and Uzhupis as the place which stays in the hеarts, in minds and dreams of those who ever vizited it.

The first traditional Scythian Circle was orginised in Uzhupis on 29 of August in 2011. Since thеn His Excellency Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Independent Republic of Uzhupis has become a Friend of Great Scythia which is an honour for Scythian people.

Scythians from many countries celebrated Uzhupis Independence Day on the 1st of April every year like their own national holiday Scythian New Year which is celebrated оn 21-st of March.

Scythia is the country without borders and territory which is located in the heart of every Scythian.

It unifies people on the basis of voluntarism and individual choice. It is a nation trying to revive and raise culture and customs of Scythia Magna. At the same time we consider Human Rights, careful treatment of nature and tolerance to be main values of our life. This is breaking racist and nationalist stereotypes, non-aggressive though very assured eliminating xenophobia and nationalism. And also, this is mutual help and support wherever scythians are. All this produces atmosphere not only of “new kind of ethnicity” but also of brotherhood and solidarity.

What is important for us, is that everybody could become Scythian. It is an inner choice of a human being to become Scythian. Ethnicity in the modern world is defined not by the color of one’s skin, eyes, hairs etc. and even not by place of birth, but rather by personal inner choice. It should not be just a game or a mask for some days, but it should be a real choice of own way, own place and own community.

Uzupis is the wedding capital of Lithuania. The bride is carried across the bridge by the groom, the stop half way and she attaches a padlock to the bridge and then throws the key into the river to symbolize an unbreakable bond. We were wondering is some brides merely pretend to throw the key and secret it in their voluminous gowns. We quickly dismissed this unromantic thought.

Gediminas' Tower - Click to enlarge.

Gediminas’ Tower – Click to enlarge.

Yesterday I climbed to the top of this hill and then to the top of Gediminas’ Tower with His Excellency Tomasz Chepaitis. It is also possible to climb to the top of the hill  by taking a funicular which reminded me of Saltburn back in England but Tomasz and I walked (slowly)

Once at the top Tomasz told me of the “Baltic Way” organised by his father in 1989. Two million citizens held hands and formed a line 600KM long starting at this very tower and stretching through Latvia and Estonia.

The first fortifications were built of wood by Duke of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Gediminas. Later the first brick castle was completed in 1409 by Grand Duke Vytautas. Some remnants of the old castle have been restored, guided by archeological research.

Gediminas’ Tower is an important state and historic symbol of the city of Vilnius and of Lithuania itself. It is depicted on the national currency, the litas, and is mentioned in numerous Lithuanian patriotic poems and folk songs. The Flag of Lithuania was re-hoisted atop the tower on October 7, 1988, during the independence movement that was finalized by the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania on March 11, 1990.[1] A reconstruction of the Royal Palace of Lithuania was completed in 2009, and is located near the base of the hill upon which Gediminas’ Tower stands.
